For more than ten years, Dow has been a driving force behind the growth of FIRST robotics in Alberta. This partnership began with a shared vision: to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers by making science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) accessible, exciting, and inclusive for youth across the province.
Building futures, one team at a time
FIRST is a global nonprofit organization that prepares young people for the future through various robotics programs. Each year, Dow provides funding that enables around 20 teams in Alberta (and one in Ontario) to participate in FIRST programs. Dow’s support for FIRST Alberta goes far beyond financial sponsorship because all of Dow's supported team also include an employee mentor. These programs engage youth in mentor-based activities that build not only technical skills but also self-confidence, communication and leadership. The teams conduct research, fundraise, design, build, and showcase their achievements in annual challenges that mirror the excitement and teamwork of sporting events.
Shared values and community impact
Dow’s investment in FIRST Alberta is rooted in shared values: gracious professionalism, innovation, discovery, inclusion, and teamwork. These principles align closely with Dow’s own corporate culture and long-standing presence in Alberta, where the company has operated for 64 years.
Looking ahead
As Dow continues to innovate—investing in automation, sustainability, and decarbonization—the company recognizes that the future depends on people who can tackle complex challenges with creativity and teamwork. Through its partnership with FIRST Alberta, Dow is helping to build that future, one student and one robot at a time.
